Patriots Moving to Hartford - Comments
updated 11/27/1998

We got many e-mails from people regarding the move of the team to Hartford, and here are some excerpts of what fans had to say (some editing done for size and content!).

Being originally from Patriot Country (Maine, to be exact), I am first and foremost very thankful to Mr. Kraft for not allowing one single-minded politician to cause my beloved Patriots to pack there bags and head to (LA? Houston?). While I am saddened for the fans in Massachusetts (and those in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont now faced with a much longer drive), I am deeply appreciative that my New England Patriots will still remain my New England Patriots!
- Jerry, Dayton, OH

I am and will continue to be very bitter that Massachusetts is losing it's NFL franchise, and I can't look at it any other way except we lost our Patriots to Conn... if he really wanted to keep the team in the MA he should have taken what the State of MA was offering, and I'll bet he was about to until Hartford started waving all that cash... Everyone points the finger at the House Speaker, including myself because he deserves half the blame, but why doesn't anyone ask Kraft what was wrong with a $57 million state subsidy. As for the Speaker of the house - you are only the temporary keeper of the gate... shame on both Kraft and Finneran.
- Mike, MA

So now what? Red Sox look for state help? Tom? Revolution heads south (of course)? Saturday night stays at Foxwoods? Super hiway built from Foxwoods to Hartford..(a natural)? A seat, aisles, bathrooms..(thx)? Boston becomes a 2nd rate city..
- Chuck, NH

Since I live in Canada the teams move to Hartford is not as alarming to me as it must be for the Mass. fans, but Foxboro and the Patriots go hand in hand so (I) wish they would have made a deal to stay. My main concern is that this doesn't become a distraction for the team
- Greg, Canada

I like everything about this deal except the city... but not in Adriaen's Landing-- it should be in South Boston. A Hartford team will be as respected an NFL city as Tennessee.
- Scott

All I have to say is this 'WELCOME TO HARTFORD THE FUTURE HOME OF THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS THANK YOU BOSTON LAW MAKERS'..........how does this sound for the headlines for the Boston Globe...
- Steve, Windsor Locks, CT

The NFL is driven by TV money and luxury suites that can be sold, we all know this. Why should anyone be surprised. The leader of the Mass. House of Reps. is directly accountable for refusing a reasonable amount of corporate help and the image of him as well as the State of Mass. will suffer accordingly. I live on the west coast so the geographical source of the TV images I see from the Pats games in a sports bar are pretty irrelevant actually. Still, now they really don't represent my home state anymore...there is no reason they could not have built a needed replacement stadium next to the old one, a shame!
- Ed, Northern California

I live in New Orleans so the move doesn't really effect me but I'm glad that they are moving. They need a new stadium badly and Hartford was willing to give them one. Why shouldn't they take it? Kraft has tried hard to get a new stadium in Mass. but he could never get it. I feel bad for the people in Mass. but it's not any of the players or Kraft's fault.
- Larry, New Orleans

Being from Connecticut, this is, by far, the best news the state has heard since last year when we heard the Pats where coming to this state, and the year before that...and before that. Well it is finally true and I couldn't be happier. Same goes for all the folks I work with in Connecticut. The Whale is dead, long live the Patriot! I can only hope that Connecticut can give as good a tailgate party as those in Foxboro!
- Jeff, Connecticut

Everybody that lives in Patriots country (I am from Rhode Island) knows the following: Hartford and Connecticut the entire western half of that state are suburbs of NY, and have more Giants than Pats fans... Hartford is a boring dump, and couldn't keep the Whalers in town... Massachussets (though I hate to admit it), is the heart of New England... Finneran is a hypocritical sh%$head... here's to hoping that the deal gets bamboozled by Connecticut politicians and voters, seeing for the rip off that is is...
- Mosi Tatupu (the real one???), Rhode Island

... I am so pissed about this Patriot move. I had been looking on the web for a half hour trying to get Finneran's contact info.... Good column. I am going to send a letter to Finneran... though I guess it is too late!
- Chris

I don't think the Patriots should move to Hartford! The team will never be the same. Something will be different about those players walking out on the field in the 1999 season in... Connecticut! I am a disappointed fan!
- Cheryl, Dallas, TX

Isn't Hartford getting a little close to New York City? Everyone knows that Boston is to cheap to build the Pats a new stadium, but Hartford is a lot less centrally located in New England than Foxboro. I live in Virginia now, so I may not consider the Pats my home team any more. I formerly lived in Quincy MA. I think they should change the name of the team, and leave the name for when Boston can get a franchise. Remember the "Boston Patriots" ?. What a great name!
