Belichick Named head Coach
(1/27/2000)

Bill Belichick today was officially named the head coach of Patriots. His contract, once signed, will be for 5 years. Today's events ends the saga which began at the end of the 1999 season when Belichick resigned from the Jets after being named their head coach upon the retirement of Bill Parcells.

In compensation for Belichick coming to New England - as it was determined he was still under contract with the Jets - a plan of draft pick transfers and swaps was negotiated between Bob Kraft and Parcells. The plan is as follows:

2000 season - The Patriots give their 1st round draft pick (16th pick overall) to the Jets

2001 season - The Patriots give their 4th and 7th round picks to the Jets, and in return, the Patriots will get the Jets 5th round pick

2002 season - The Patriots give nothing, but will get the Jets 7th round pick
